Optical fibres for data transfer are used in a wide range of industrial sectors. Connecting these cables is now easier thanks to the introduction of glass optical fibre modules for Multi-Contact's CombiTac connector system.
The four pole connectors accept 3 mm diameter single or multimode fibre, with the graded index fibre types being 50/125 um or 62.5/125 um. If preferred, sockets and pins can be supplied pre-assembled with 1m long fibre, terminated with either ST or SC standard connectors.
Insertion losses are less than 0.5 dB at 1310 nm, depending on assembly type. Contact pressure is 10 N per contact with 3 mm spring deflection. The contacts are rated for over 500 mating cycles, with a cleaning interval every 100 cycles. The rated temperature range is -30degC to +90degC.
Suitable applications include factory automation, medical equipment and in the rail industry for control and passenger information systems.
In addition to optical fibre contacts, the CombiTac system can be fitted with any combination of high voltage, high current, databus, power, thermocouple, coaxial, pneumatic and fluid connectors. The contact carriers are housed in a compact, robust frame for panel mounting or built into DIN coupler hoods.
