With the former Olympic Stadium at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park undergoing a massive transformation in order to turn the prestigious stadium into a year round multi-use venue that will deliver a lasting sporting, cultural and community legacy to the entire nation, one of the most crucial requirements was to reconfigure and reinstall the iconic state of the art arena lighting to achieve the optimum lighting performance as one would expect in a first class sporting venue.
With multi-use being a driving factor, an automated contactor controlled lighting system has been introduced to allow ease of re-use and the re-aiming of existing luminaires to provide a multi-use venue post the games, thus ensuring that all spectators have an exceptional experience when visiting the arena for a variety of future events.
To achieve this, and in order to retain the iconic triangular ‘games’ shape, the new 45 tonne 18m floodlight paddles which each house between 8 and 41 lamps, had to be lifted into place 30m above the Stadium floor.
It was at this stage that the lighting commissioners selected the integral contactors and respective automation and enclosures from TLA’s extensive new product catalogue.

The Stadium will reopen temporarily for five matches of the Rugby World Cup towards the end of September 2015, before opening permanently as the new home of West Ham United Football Club and national competition centre for UK Athletics in 2016. When it will boast of a pitch will be 105m x 68m which is equivalent to Wembley Stadium, the Emirates, the Etihad and Old Trafford.
